Developing confident and capable health practitioners

Enabling Others

Enabling Others

Enabling and supporting others (including individuals, families and groups) to address their own health and wellbeing needs is an essential skill of most newly qualified practitioners. This would include such areas as:

• enabling people to acknowledge and address issues in their lives
• helping people to develop their knowledge and skills
• helping people manage their health conditions
• providing advice and information
• supporting carers in their caring roles
• supporting people to live independently
• supporting people during life events.

    Enabling Patients/Clients

As a newly qualified practitioner it is essential that you develop the clinical skills to help and enable people meet their daily health and wellbeing needs. Remember that the emphasis of your development within this section is such that you support and enable the patient/client to do these activities for themselves (rather than you doing it for them). Identify with your preceptor the opportunities within your clinical area to enable people to meet their daily health and wellbeing needs.

Building your skills to enable others

Select areas where you can practice your skills to facilitate and develop the patient/client to maintain their own health and well being. This might also involve teaching another healthcare professional or student to develop these skills. Develop an action plan to build upon your knowledge, skills and experience in enabling others. In conjunction with your preceptor choose cases which progress in terms of their complexity. This will enable you to build up your confidence and competence over the episodes of care.
