Developing confident and capable health practitioners

Communication

Communication

As a newly qualified practitioner, you will already have developed a sound foundation of communication skills, which you will build upon throughout your career. Now you are a registered and qualified practitioner, embarking upon a career in NHS England, you have many skills to bring to the organisation and patient care. At this point you will be competent in many routine situations but as your career progresses you will need to gradually become more confident with a wider range of communication skills in increasingly complex situations. In this new phase, the demands will increase and you will be in a position to influence care and to develop your preferred style of working with patients, carers and other members of the healthcare team.

This unit, as part of Flying Start England, is designed to encourage you to enhance your communication skills within your professional role. As the Communication unit integrates materials from all the other learning units you will need to keep revisiting it throughout the year.

Aim:

Be able to communicate confidently and competently with patients, carers, colleagues and other agencies using a range of skills and approaches in increasingly complex situations.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this unit and following a period of reflective practice, you will be able to:

  • Utilise a range of skills that support effective communication within any healthcare setting.
  • Appraise the methods used by the multi-professional team to provide effective communication.
  • Identify your continuing learning needs in relation to communication skills.
