This unit, as part of the Flying Start England programme is designed to encourage newly qualified practitioners to understand the role of policy and legislation in informing and regulating healthcare provision. The unit will enable you to be more aware of the national policies that help to guide local healthcare provision. The NHS is currently undergoing a significant transformation as a result of an in-depth review lead by Lord Darzi. There is a vision that the NHS in the future will give patients and the public with more information and choice, works in partnership and has quality at its heart. The outcome of this review has far reaching challenges and aspirations for the NHS and all those that work within it.

Aim:

To understand the policy and organisational context of health and social care in the NHS.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this unit, and following a period of reflective practice you will be able to:

  • Understand the policy context.
  • Identify local strategies that are designed to enhance patient care.
  • Understand the process of consultation in the NHS.
  • Know how to contribute to influencing future service provision within your healthcare setting.
